Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, the freedom
fighter for India, the great son of Mother
India, was born on 2nd of
October. His birthday is celebrated as “Gandhi Jayanti” on 2nd
October every year. A national holiday is also celebrated to mark the occasion.
Mahatma Gandhi also known as “bapu” (means father) was a freedom fighter who
strongly believed in non – violence and with his beliefs he fought the battle
of independence for India non-violently. It was his actions that forced the
British Empire to quit India on 15th august 1947 which is now
celebrated as “Independence day of India”. Gandhi Jayanti is marked by prayer
services and tributes all over India, especially at Ra Ghat, Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi
where he was cremated.
Popular activities include prayer meetings, commemorative ceremonies in
different cities by colleges, local government institutions and socio-political
institutions
The story or history behind 2nd October does not end
here. The United Nations General Assembly
announced on 15 June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that 2
October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence
which adds more importance to this date.
Another great
leader of Free India Late Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2nd
October 1904. He
And the latest addition to 2nd October’s
importance is ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’.
Swachh
Bharat Abhiyaan is a national campaign started on 2nd of October
2014 by “Government of India” which is meant to clean whole India including
streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. This program is started by Mr
Narendra Modi present Prime Minister of India at Rajghat, New Delhi as a remembrance
to Gandhiji’s words. This program is widely appreciated and supported by
various celebrities and people.
All of this adds great importance to legacy of 2nd
October. Above incidents explain some of it. This date is widely recognised by
world community also due to announcement of International Da y of Non-Violence
by United Nations General Assembly .
Thus we can say that 2nd of October holds a great importance in
Indian History and present generation is only adding to it.
